Barking Moonbats, or, How To Make Your Point With Insults

So I’m cruising around online and I find this site called Power Line. Basically a right-wing blog. Anyway, one of the posts for 2/22/2005 was Moonbats on Parade (Rated X)

Moonbats? WTF? I’d never heard the phrase. None of the normal sources either. Finally, a blogging glossary clued me in:

Individual archives - Glossary
Barking moonbat

noun. Someone on the extreme edge of whatever their -ism happens to be.

(coined by Perry de Havilland, an editor of Samizdata)

Usage:”Definition of a ‘barking moonbat’: someone who sacrifices sanity for the sake of consistency”
-Adriana Cronin

Apparently it is used in certain circles (”sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property” [see Samizdata]) to refer to people on the left of center in political terms. Wait a tick, by linking to them I’m increasing the Google PageRank… Oh well…
